Chemical Safety During Work with Experimental Animals
A hazardous chemical agent in animal research is any chemical that poses a risk to laboratory personnel, animal care staff, other animals, or the environment during its use.
Researchers who are planning to use chemicals that are hazardous, potentially hazardous, or with unknown properties to treat animals must be aware that research staff may be exposed to these chemicals during preparation, handling, or administration. In addition, these substances may be excreted and/or secreted and contaminate animal bedding. Veterinarians and vivarium staff can be exposed to these chemical or their metabolites during standard animal care (cage changing, administering chemically treated water or chow). To prevent exposure and to protect human health, a proper risk assessment must be performed for each hazardous chemical. Safe handling information must be included in the animal protocol and approved by IACUC.
